Terminology

4WD (four-wheel drive) - a drive system in which engine power is transmitted to all four wheels for improved traction

ABS (anti-lock braking system) - a safety braking system which uses sensors to determine when the wheels are about to lock up and prevents such lock up by modulating the brakes, which decreases the stopping distance and maintains control of the vehicle by allowing it to maneuver around the obstacles.

AWD (all-wheel drive) - a vehicle transmission system that delivers power to all four wheels at the same time

gymkhana [jim-kah-nuh] - a competition in which sports cars are timed around a closed twisting course that requires considerable maneuvering, sometimes called autocross

supercharger - a fan or compressor driven by the engine that forces air into the engine to increase engine power

TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) - a safety system that continuously monitors tire pressure and warns the driver if the pressure becomes too low or too high. Some systems utilize sensors placed directly in the tires while others infer this information indirectly by monitoring wheel speed and other vehicle sensors. In US required on all 2008+ vehicles.

turbocharger (turbo) - a centrifugal compressor which boosts intake pressure of an engine, driven by a turbine turned by the engine's exhaust gases
